About the Department

Since its inception in 2001, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Government College of Engineering Kannur has been a distinguished center of learning in North Kerala. The Department offers a robust array of academic programs, including undergraduate (B.Tech) , Post graguate (Mtech) and doctoral (PhD) studies. In 2024, the Department proudly introduced a new MTech Program in Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, admitting an inaugural batch of 6 students, marking a significant expansion of its academic offerings.

Initially, the undergraduate B.Tech program had an AICTE-sanctioned intake of 30 students, which was later increased to 60 students in 2011. This four-year program, currently affiliated with A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), is structured into eight semesters. While the first two semesters cover a common syllabus across all engineering branches, students specialize from the third to the eighth semester in core areas of Computer Science & Engineering such as Computer Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Theory of Computation, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, and Computer Networks. Course evaluation includes Continuous Assessment (CA) and End-Semester Examinations (ESE).

The Department is proud to serve as a research center approved by KTU, with vibrant research activities underway. The highly qualified faculty includes one Professor, two Associate Professors, and nine Assistant Professors, supported by a skilled technical staff of nine, comprising two Computer Programmers, three Trade Instructors, and four Tradesmen.

Our cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure includes a Central Computing Lab in the main college block and six specialized labs in the department’s dedicated lab building. The department also houses an extensive library with over 2,000 books, catering to a wide array of topics in Computer Science.

As a government institution, we consistently attract top-tier students, and our graduates achieve excellent results in B.Tech examinations. Our students have a strong record of securing placements in reputed companies through campus recruitment, while many pursue higher education in prestigious institutions. Active in both extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, our students bring honor and recognition to the Department through various achievements.

With the launch of the MTech program in Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, the Department continues to expand its academic horizon, preparing students for the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
