The Government of Kerala State has implemented the Visiting Faculty Scheme (VFS) with the aim of enlisting the expertise of experienced teachers and industry experts to contribute to the state's Government colleges. This program has been enthusiastically executed and is currently ongoing with esteemed professionals from prestigious organizations such as IITs, IISc, and NITs.
Over the past several years, the Department of Computer Science & Engineering has successfully organized numerous Visiting Faculty Programmes.
1. VFS on “ ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS ” for S2 Computer Science & Engineering students
The visiting faculty program took place on February 5th and 6th, 2020, at the Computer Science Seminar Hall. Ms. JIJI P V, an Assistant Professor from the Post Graduate Department of English at Govt. Brennen College Dharmadam, Thalassery, conducted all the sessions. During the program, Ms. JIJI P V covered the topics of personal passive and subject-verb agreement, while also providing valuable advice on enhancing communication skills and addressing common communication mistakes.
Furthermore, the session included a comprehensive explanation of paraphrasing, and the students were assigned relevant tasks on the subject. Ms. JIJI P V emphasized the significance of reading newspapers, books, and watching English programs as effective means to improve communication skills. She encouraged students to think in English instead of their native language to enhance their abilities in communication. Additionally, she recommended various online resources to further augment these skills. Overall, the session proved extremely advantageous for the students' future careers.
2.VFS on “Software Engineering – Best Practices” for S6 Computer Science & Engineering students
An Expert Talk titled "Software Engineering – Best Practices" was arranged for S6 B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering students at the CSE Seminar Hall, Government College of Engineering Kannur. The talk was presented by Mr. Mrudulraj Thazhathu Veettil, who holds the position of Senior Member Technical Lead at Amedeus Software Labs, on February 13, 2020. The session commenced at 9:00 AM and extended until 12:30 PM.
Mr. Mrudulraj Thazhathu Veettil began the talk with an introduction to Software Engineering, where he elaborated on its importance, purpose, and functioning. He stressed the significance of practical implementation and encouraged students to engage in hands-on activities to strengthen their grasp of the concepts. Furthermore, he outlined the responsibilities of a software engineering team in the software development process. The students actively participated and interacted with the expert, seeking insights into the current skill set demanded by Software companies.
Throughout the talk, Mr. Veettil delivered expert lectures on various Software Engineering concepts, providing comprehensive knowledge on each topic covered during the session. He also guided the students on the latest software development techniques adopted by leading IT organizations. The students displayed considerable interest and actively engaged in the discussions. The lecture concluded with a motivational speech, during whic
3.VFS on “Routing Protocols “ for S6 Computer Science & Engineering students
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized an Expert Talk on "Routing Protocols" in Computer Networks for S6 CSE students (2017 Admission) on February 25, 2020. The sessions were conducted by Mr. Jaisooraj J, a PhD Scholar in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at NIT Calicut. The program took place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the CSE Seminar Hall, Government College of Engineering Kannur.
The overall program proved to be highly beneficial for the students. It delved deep into the importance and significance of real-time routing protocols, as well as discussed the challenges of routing protocols in the context of IoT. The session covered various legacy routing protocols such as shortest path routing, flooding, and distance vector routing. Additionally, modern routing protocols like RIP and OSPF were also studied during the
4. VFS on “Deep learning for Computer Vision” for S7 BTech students
A talk on ‘ Deep learning for Computer Vision” was handled by Dr. Athira Nambiar, Post Doc Researcher, Computer Vision lab, IIT Madras on 12 th July 2019. The target audience was final year BTech Students. This talk gave a flavour of the recent progress made in the field with a highlight on deep learning techniques.Computer vision is the field of computer science that gives computers the ability to "see" and to extract high- level understanding from images and videos, in the same way that human vision does. It finds enormous applications in various areas such as multimedia, robotics, surveillance, social media etc. Recently, there has been an exponential advance in the field, mainly due to the emergence of deep learning techniques. The field is hot and dynamic with lots of new algorithms and design proposals, nevertheless, there are still rooms available to explore further. Artificial Intelligence being a key area of interest, computer vision scientists across the globe are working on cutting edge research in this field as part of the movement of creating an intelligent world. To summarize, the talk comprised of (i) a brief introduction to the field of computer vision and its evolution over time, (ii) a glimpse of deep learning techniques and the functioning of neural networks and (iii) an overview of various applications of deep learning for computer vision tasks.
TEQIP Sponsored Expert Talk on FOSS – Tools and Techniques
A workshop on FOSS -Tools and Techniques was conducted on 23 rd and 24 th January 2020 for S4 Computer Science Students. The workshop was organized to inculcate in- depth knowledge of linux programming and kernel optimization. The sessions were handled by Mr. Justin Joseph , Managing Director, Mewije Info Technics. The workshop was organized as four hands-on-sessions where the students were introduced to advanced linux commands, installing applications after compiling the source code fetched from a repository and compilation of a linux kernel and its installation on a local system.
