Department of Civil Engineering

About the Department

The Department of Civil Engineering is functioning at Govt. College of Engineering Kannur since 1986 The department currently offers a four-year course leading to the bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (with an intake of 60) and two, two-year programmes leading to master’s degree in Computer Aided Structural Engineering (CAS) and Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental Energy (GGE), with an intake of 18 each. The department has produced several eminent engineers who have made significant contributions in the planning and execution of Civil Engineering projects in India as well as abroad. In the year 2006, the department was recognized as Research Center under Kannur university. Over four decades, the department has carved its niche in the areas of academics, research, consultancy, collaborative projects, and publications. The department has been actively involved in conducting conferences, workshops, FDP’s, site Visits, project tours and several students related programs to provide a platform for sharing and spreading the latest developments in the field of Civil Engineering. The BTech programme of the Department is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), valid up to June 2023.

MTech (Computer-Aided Structural Engineering) or Master of Technology in Computer-Aided Structural Engineering is a two-year postgraduate programme in Civil Engineering. Computer-Aided Structural Engineering is a cutting-edge curriculum that combines current breakthroughs in structural engineering and computer science. The programme offers structural engineers with the flexibility and freedom needed to get a better understanding of structural behaviour in the presence of material and geometric non-linearity, as well as loading uncertainty. The Computer Aided Structural Engineering programme is suitable for individuals who desire to get an in depth understanding of mathematical modelling and computational methods in non-linear, static, and dynamic structural analysis. Candidates who complete the Computer Aided Structural Engineering programme find employment in the aerospace, automotive, chemical, communication, electronics, manufacturing, and processing sectors, as well as government and education. The Programme has its major core courses in topics dealing with Theory of elasticity, Structural dynamics, Finite element method and the like. A good number of electives are offered in areas such as Plates and shells, Design of bridges, Stability of structures etc.

The MTech Programme in Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental Energy is an inter- disciplinary course for Civil Engineering graduates covering Geotechnical Engineering and Geo-Environmental Engineering. Geotechnical Engineering is aimed at providing safe and stable foundations for all structures founded in all types of soils. Geo-Environmental Engineering is another aspect of Geotechnical Engineering which will equip the society with sustainable solutions for problems like engineered waste disposal, and reuse of waste materials, climate change, fighting energy crisis etc. Considering the vast prospects of Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental Engineering in modern world, it is very vivid that there is a global demand for engineers with postgraduate degree in Geotechnical and Geo- Environmental Energy especially when the entire world is working towards attaining the sustainable development goals. This Programme will train engineers to develop environmentally sound solutions to Geotechnical problems and to solve Environmental Engineering problems unique to soil and subsurface conditions. The Programme has its major core courses in topics dealing with Advanced soil mechanics, Foundation Analysis and design, Earth Retaining Structures etc. A good number of electives are offered in areas such as Ground Improvement techniques, Waste Management and containment Systems, Environmental Remediation Engineering, Reinforced Earth and Geosynthetics, Geo Environmental Engineering, Environmental System Analysis, Problematic soils and Geo- Environmental concerns, Behaviour and testing of unsaturated soils, Applications of Remote Sensing in Geotechnical Engineering, Sustainable Geotechnics etc.

The M. Tech. programmes (CAS & GGE) are affiliated with APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and incorporate industry/interdisciplinary electives and internships in the curriculum that give students exposure to the industrial setting outside of the classroom and help develop skilled professionals for the sector. The project work (can be choses either as industry or research oriented) is spread over the third and fourth semesters. The duration of the programmes is two years consisting of four semesters with an intake of 18 students per year.
